Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology possesses many benefits and features which could fast replace the traditional barcode system. A track and trace system was designed for SIMTech in collaboration with NTU. The system was implemented in Java based on the RFID technology and the Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS) standard. The full system is a joint effort between 4 projects. Each project focused on one aspect of the system namely the reader hardware interfacing, the GPS device application programming, information management, and web interface display. This project focused on the information management implementation which consisted of a database server, a gateway server, and an EPCIS Access Client. A Business Scenario Application was also implemented to showcase the feasibility of using RFID technology in the business context. User authentication was also included in the system to enhance security for the information stored. It is projected that this track and trace system will enable companies in the supply chain to better manage their resources and thus minimizing on the costs involved. This is made possible by providing a higher level of product information visibility to all the involved parties through the RFID technology.
