School of Computer Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Computer science and engineering::Computing methodologies::Computer graphics This project was carried out between June 2004 and July 2006 and was supported by NTU Startup Grant under reference number SUG8/04. The purpose of this project was to develop novel techniques for processing digital geometry models. With advances in computing hardware and acquisition technology, digital geometry is becoming a new multimedia data type after sound, images, and video. Due to the inherent complex structure of 3D geometry, traditional tools like digital signal processing, which have been successful for sound, images and video, are not immediately applicable to this new data type. The development of new techniques and theories is highly desired. This project investigated subdivision-related techniques for geometric modeling and their mathematical foundation such as spline knot insertion and removal. In particular, the research focused on three fundamental problems: developing robust and linear complexity interpolation algorithms using classic approximating subdivision schemes; investigating local surface refinement and simplification; and optimizing the shape of digital geometric models.
