Description
Summary:This dissertation described the development of the national and public libraries in Singapore from 1823 to 1995. This study supplemented what is available in published books and articles on the history of the National Library. The history has been divided into four phases, reflecting the four different types of management: (1) School Library: 1823-1844, (2) Proprietary Library: 1844-1874, (3) Government Library: 1874-1958 and (4) National Library: 1958-1995. The early history from 1823 to 1958 formed an introduction to the principal subject of this dissertation, that is, the development of the modern (post-1 958) National Library, when the foundations of the present library service were laid down by dedicated professionals.
