Description
Summary:This study delves into the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the fast fashion industry, particularly its potential to foster sustainability. With the fashion sector under scrutiny for its environmental impact, the research aims to explore how AI can serve as a transformative tool to make the industry more sustainable. The paper begins by outlining the current state of fast fashion and its environmental repercussions, followed by a comprehensive review of existing literature on AI applications across the fashion value chain, and the increased interest in research papers published in the fields of AI and sustainability in the fashion industry. Case studies of companies already employing AI for various purposes, such as generative design and trend forecasting, are analyzed. Consumer perspectives on sustainable fashion and AI-designed clothing are also examined through a survey conducted by the author, bolstered by supporting surveys done by established companies. The study identifies significant research gaps, notably the limited focus on the sustainability aspect when implementing AI in fashion design and the need for more global research. While AI's application in fast fashion shows promise, especially in design and consumer engagement, the study concludes that continued research is needed to fully realize its potential for sustainability. Future work should focus on consumer behaviour, sustainable design algorithms, and global applicability to create a more sustainable fast fashion ecosystem.
