There is a long cooperation history between Hong Kong and Guangdong. In the ongoing collaborative endeavors, Shenzhen as a geographical neighbor and Guangzhou as the provincial capital, both have been pivotal in fostering interactions with Hong Kong. The border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen separates the two systems, and regional cooperation means crossing this border to realize the integration of the two systems, two levels of development, and two ideologies. This precisely encapsulates the research focus of this thesis: cross-border.
This thesis takes the Hong Kong films that have represent the two Guangdong metropolises Shenzhen and Guangzhou since the 1980s as the research object, starting with the three themes of cross-border population, cross-border crime, and cross-border film industry, drawing upon Darin Barney’s network society theory, integrating the concepts of borders and regions, constructing a regional network society encompassing Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, and utilizing its operating principles to explore how the action and concept of cross-border in Hong Kong movies influenced the "others" imagination of Shenzhen and Guangzhou, and how Hong Kong shaped its self-identity. |
