Contemporary Taiwanese literature is rich and diverse, with a profusion of styles, and animals are often encountered in these literary works. Under the influence of the author's background, animals were imbued with profound meanings, forming a unique genre of animal literature. Like Singapore, Taiwan is an island surrounded by the sea, and marine creatures in literary works, such as "fishes", "whales" and "dolphins", are all endowed with unique meanings by their authors. From various authors’ perspectives, contemporary Taiwanese sea literature presents distinctive types of literary creation, which are worth exploring. Therefore, this thesis will focus on the works of renowned Taiwanese writers, Hung-gee Liao and Syaman
Rapongan, exploring their portrayal of marine animals in contemporary Taiwanese sea literature, aimed to shed light on the unique characteristics of Taiwan’s indigenous people, and address issues related to the preservation of Taiwan’s sea and marine life.
In the introduction, the definition of sea literature and marine animal literature, an outline of the history of contemporary Taiwanese sea literature, and the backgrounds of renowned Taiwanese writers, Hung-gee Liao and Syaman Rapongan, will be discussed. This encompasses their motivation to compose Taiwanese sea literature, and its significance. Next, in the first chapter, the purpose of Hung-gee Liao to write <Jing Sheng Jing Shi> from his fisherfolk perspective, the ecological issues brought out and the erroneous portrayal of whales and dolphins will be analyzed. Subsequently, in the second chapter, the focus will be on Syaman Rapongan’s reasons to create <Wo Yuan Shi Na Pian Hai Yang De Yu Lin> from theYami man’s perspective, delving into the Yami’s one of a kind thinking and the crises faced by the Yami (Tao) Tribe due to modernization. Finally, in the third chapter, comparative analysis of <Jing Sheng Jing Shi> and < Wo Yuan Shi Na Pian Hai Yang De Yu Lin> will be conducted from various aspects, such as background, purpose of writing, perspective, anthropocentrism and ecocentrism, investigating why these two literary works despite being created in similar eras, exhibit significant differences. |
