From the historical 'Yellow Peril' discourse to the contemporary portrayal of the model minority, British Chinese individuals have been subject to evolving stereotypical perceptions. The concept of the model minority, originally conceived in the American context, has been increasingly applied to the British Chinese community, particularly within the discourse surrounding educational attainment and socio-economic success. Despite the prominence of the model minority narrative, research examining its validity and implications within the British Chinese context remains limited. As educational attainment remains a topic of strong interest among the British public and mass media, this study aims to address this by scrutinizing the construction and effects of the model minority stereotype among British Chinese students, their families, and educators.
