言——华文有着特殊的情意结。
然而,在语言环境的骤变下,这些华校师生对华文的情意结是否产生了变化?
探讨这个问题有助于深入了解华校师生的心理伤痕。本文将分析华校师生在 70 至 80
年代的教育体系转型下的经历,以新加坡华语作家在教育改革时期所创作的伤痕文学
作品为例,深入地探索这些小人物在面对整个大环境变迁时对语言所产生的思想和心
理变化。
During 1970s to 1980s, Singapore witnessed the end of Chinese-medium education
and teaching. Against the backdrop of heightened political sensitivity in the 1980s, Singapore
pushed out its first major educational reform since independence. The reform brought about
radical changes to the traditional Chinese education, which had previously emphasized the
use of Mandarin Chinese as its first language of instruction in school. This also signalled the
end for Chinese vernacular schools in Singapore, in a nation where majority of its population
constitutes of ethnic Chinese.
The prevailing and bleak future gave rise to the emergence of the “Literature of the
Wounded” (“shānghén wénxué”). Many of these authors were either graduates or teachers
from Chinese schools. Each of them harboured a strong emotional attachment to their first
language - Chinese.
Would the abrupt transition to a different linguistic environment alter the emotional
connection that Chinese school teachers and students had towards Chinese language?
Exploring this question would help to deepen our understanding of the psychological wounds
suffered by Chinese school teachers and students. This paper will analyse the experiences of
Chinese school teachers and students during the educational reform under the period of 1970s
to 1980s. Additionally, this paper will go on to analyse different novels written by
Singaporean Chinese writers during this era, exploring the profound psychological and
ideological changes brought about by linguistic challenges faced by these individuals amidst
educational reformation. |
