Generative AI and unproctored internet tests (UITs): an analysis of the effects of personality, tech-savviness and past unfair work experience on dishonest behaviour and association with attitudes towards cheating
This paper explores the effects of Personality (Conscientiousness, Neuroticism and Kiasu), Tech-savviness and Past Unfair Work Experience on an individual’s likelihood of engaging in dishonest behaviour during Unproctored Internet Tests (UITs) and its association with an individual’s attitudes towar...

Cheating has been found to be common among students in an academic setting and employees who engage in dishonest behaviour may cause severe consequences. Personality, tech-savviness and one’s past experience has been found to be predictors of cheating behaviour in the literature. This study will expand on it by incorporating Generative AI, a novel technology introduced to the world in 2022. This study surveyed 154 people in Singapore from various age groups. They were provided with a UIT scenario and asked if they would cheat using Generative AI. 71% of participants revealed that they would use some form of Generative AI to cheat during the UIT scenario. This study also found that Conscientiousness reduced the likelihood of one using Generative AI to cheat in UITs while Tech-savviness increased it. Conscientiousness, Dark Triad Tech-savviness and Past Unfair Work Experiences were found to be significantly associated with Attitudes Towards Cheating. This study serves as a foundation to the small existing pool of research on Generative AI given its novelty and encourages future studies to probe deeper into the factors influencing one to engage in dishonest behaviours. Corporations should also look for ways to avoid recruitment tests that can be exploited and completed using Generative AI.
