Summary: | Smoking prohibition has been in place in Singapore since the 1970s. Over the years, Singapore has introduced a handful of policies to curb smoking habits. These policies include an increase in excise duty for all tobacco products, an increase in the minimum legal age, and an increase to the restrictions of public smoking areas. Despite the implementation of these policies, the illegal usage and sales of nicotine vaping products (NVPs), an alternative to smoking, has shown to be an increasingly prevailing issue in Singapore. This paper argues that the decrease in smoking prevalence rates may have a correlation with the increasing prevalence of NVPs. The proposed research intends to determine the effectiveness of recent smoking control policies, with the consideration of youths who have transitioned from smoking to vaping; determine the factors that have led to these transitions; evaluate these factors; and through the guidance of an existing framework, suggest possible recommendations to be made to existing smoking and vaping policies. |
