Summary: | The purpose of this study is to investigate the flow behaviour of a submarine to bridge the knowledge gap, as submarines are usually classified in nature. This is especially so for modern submarine where the engineering behind its capabilities is secret to gain an upper hand on the battlefield.
This project developed a set-up which enables testing at various pitching and yawing angles to understand how the flow dynamics will result. The mode of flow visualisation used in this study was particle image velocimetry (PIV). The study has returned promising results which trends and behaviour are largely of expectation, where vortices form due to control surfaces and how different vortices interact with each other. However, deviations from the trends at extreme angles are observed as well, in which the Author attempts to provide some analysis and speculations.
The flow interaction results will enable valuable insights into how a submarine can be better designed to meet better qualities and specifications, enabling naval forces to gain an edge in warfare. |
