Exploring the use of drones to deliver medicine and medical supplies to elderly patients in Singapore

The growing number of elderly individuals living alone presents a significant challenge, particularly concerning their ability to access essential medication and medical supplies due to mobility issues. Conventional delivery solutions, primarily land vehicles, may not adequately address this issue, leading to missed dosages and potential health risks. This research project aimed to explore the feasibility of using drones to deliver medication and medical supplies to elderly patients, specifically within the unique context of Singapore. The project employed a multi-faceted approach, including the development of an operational concept model with risk management considerations and the production of a prototype to examine the technical aspects and challenges associated with drone delivery implementation. Additionally, a survey involving 55 respondents, comprising both elderly individuals and the general public, was conducted to gauge opinions on drone delivery services for medical supplies. The results indicate a high level of feasibility and desirability for implementing drone delivery in Singapore, with respondents expressing willingness to utilise and even pay for such services in the future. This innovative transportation method has the potential to complement existing medication delivery methods and address the growing needs of the elderly population in Singapore, thereby bridging an important market gap in healthcare delivery. Recommendations for future actions included acquiring larger drone for the prototype, conducting outdoor testing with real medication, implementing autonomous piloting, and collaborating with Community Clubs and Residents' Committee for actual delivery simulations. Additionally, surveying existing startups for insights on compliance with regulations and operational processes is advised. These recommendations aim to enhance the development and deployment of the proposed drone delivery solution, ultimately improving healthcare accessibility for elderly individuals in Singapore.
