Description
Summary:With an increase in demand for energy-efficient and sustainable lighting solutions, smart lighting systems have witnessed a surge in adoption as observed by the exponential growth of the smart lighting market. Through intelligent lighting control using sensors, coupled with the integration of other systems for added functionality, grid-connected smart lighting solutions have gained traction due to the substantial energy savings and enhanced user experience that they can provide. However, while developed areas with access to the electrical grid have reaped the benefits of grid-connected smart lighting, rural regions lacking access to reliable energy sources and internet connectivity have lagged behind in the adoption of smart lighting systems. This project aims to address this disparity by developing a standalone solar-powered smart lighting system, equipped with IoT capabilities enabled by long-range wireless communication technology, that can be deployed in remote locations without access to an electrical grid. By leveraging on the availability of solar power as a renewable energy resource, as well as LoRaWAN for long range IoT applications, this project seeks to bridge the gap between urban and rural areas. The smart lighting system developed in this project implements an automatic smart lighting solution with adaptive brightness that can also be controlled with its own touchscreen control interface. The smart lighting system also integrates voice operated pick-by-light functionality into the overall smart lighting system package, demonstrating the transformative potential of smart lighting systems in revolutionizing not only energy usage but enhancing everyday tasks as well. This project demonstrates the process of designing and building a prototype standalone solar powered smart lighting system, that is scalable and can be easily integrated into existing infrastructure. The project also successfully tested the feasibility of LoRaWAN for IoT applications in remote locations, to extend device connectivity beyond short range communication. Overall, this project lays the foundation for future development into standalone smart lighting solutions, where smart lighting systems become accessible to all, irrespective of geographical and infrastructural constraints leading to a more sustainable future.
