Summary: | With the rapid development of the economy, Singapore is facing the same issues as other advanced countries, which is an ageing society. According to the speech from Prime Minister Lee on 11th April 2023, statistics had shown that in the year 2010, there is about 1 in 10 Singaporeans were aged 65 and above. Studies show that in the year 2020, this number will rise to 1 in 6 Singaporeans aged 65 and above and may further escalate in the year 2030 to 1 in 4. [1]
Aside from the issues above, according to a study from the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH), statistics have shown the number of Singaporeans that are aged 65 and above who stay alone is rising, from 58,000 in the year 2018 to 79,000 in the year 2022. MOH suspect that this number will continue to increase since the population ages and the average household size in Singapore is decreasing. [2]
With the number of Singaporeans aged 65 and above staying alone, there will be a risk of them falling without being noticed by their next of kin or neighbours. Hence, they might face injury with no help given. Therefore, a monitoring system needs to be designed for monitoring those elderly who stay alone and can alarm their next of kin or relevant authority if they face an emergency so that these elderly can receive the required help in time.
Though there are different solutions from different countries present in the current market, most of the systems may violate privacy, as they involve camera devices in the monitoring system. The use of camera devices in the system causes those methods to be unusable in sensitive areas, such as toilets or bathrooms. Therefore, the designation of a monitoring system that can do the same job as the system proposed in the current market but without the usage of the camera device is crucial. The Smart Detection of Human Posture come in handy to solve the problem mentioned above. |
