Description
Summary:Maritime transport is vulnerable to disruptions which could threaten the resilience performance of maritime businesses. Consequently, the management of disruptions has gained significant attention from academics and the industry. The objective of this study is to review and consolidate academic research on disruption management in maritime shipping. A systematic review is performed on the search engine, Scopus. The review findings highlight (1) major categories of disruptions; (2) impacts of disruptions, which include social and economic impact and operational challenges; and (3) disruption management strategies, which cover technology, policies and regulations, service quality improvement, capacity management, collaboration with stakeholders as well as continuous training and education. The study contributes to the literature by providing a timely consolidation of the increasing focus on disruption management and maritime resilience. The results offer some implications for government authorities, policymakers, and maritime industry players to ensure the shipping industry continues to be resilient and versatile to thrive in this dynamic, fast-paced, and ever-changing environment. Recommendations for future research are also provided.
