The Southern trajectory in Taiwanese literary subjectivity: a study of Taiwanese literature during the Nanshin-ron and new southbound policy periods
This p...

This paper aims to trace the transformations and shifts of the concept of the "South" across different periods in the history of Taiwanese literature and explore its role in the development of Taiwanese literary subjectivity. The scope of this research focuses on the literary changes from the Japanese colonial era to the Nationalist government era, and finally to the contemporary period of the "New Southbound Policy." It emphasizes understanding how the term "South" has evolved into a unique yet often hidden trajectory in Taiwanese literary history, shaping and influencing the construction of Taiwanese nativism, subjectivity, and self-identity.
The paper primarily discusses two periods: the Nanshin-ron discourse during the Japanese colonial period and the "New Southbound Policy" under the democratic government. Since the "Nationalist Southern Narrative" has already been extensively studied, it will not be the focal point of this analysis. Through close reading of texts and a combination of historical and social contexts, this paper seeks to reveal how the concept of the "South" has served as a reference point for the "self" and the "other" in different periods of Taiwanese history. |
