This paper aims to explore the similarities and differences between Ge Fei's Jiangnan Trilogy and George Orwell's 1984. The article first reviews the development of utopian and anti-utopian literature, clarifies the definition of anti-utopia, and points out that while the Jiangnan Trilogy outwardly follows the form of utopian narrative, it actually contains the essence of anti-utopia. Secondly, by analysing the depiction of utopian conception, construction, and maintenance in both works, this paper reveals the commonalities between the two in their critique of real-world utopias and their pursuit of spiritual utopias. The article then explains how Ge Fei, by integrating the traditional Chinese "Peach Blossom Spring" ideal, endows the Jiangnan Trilogy with unique cultural significance and spiritual depth, allowing it to surpass 1984 within the framework of anti-utopian literature. In conclusion, this paper finds that the Jiangnan Trilogy inherits the critical spirit of Western anti-utopian novels, while expanding the form and content of anti-utopian literature through the integration of Chinese traditional culture. |
