After the failure of the Hundred Days' Reform, Empress Dowager Cixi and the
conservatives of the Qing Government ordered for the arrest of all reformers. Fortunately, the reformist leader, Kang Youwei, managed to leave China before his arrest. On 2nd February 1900, Kang escaped to Singapore from Hong Kong with the help from Singapore Chinese Khoo Seok Wan and the British Colonial government. During his time in Singapore, Kang continued to
face precarious situations due to the numerous assassin attempts ordered by Cixi.
Despite these challenges, Kang continued to advocate for the reform of China, and even
mobilised the overseas Chinese community to support his cause. As the leading figure of both the Reformist Faction and the Chinese Empire Reform Association, Kang had great influence on the overseas Chinese community. His advocacy on Reformism was also well-received by many Singapore Chinese. By the time he arrived at the shores of Singapore, there were already existing mechanism that supported his reform activities. With the help from Chinese like Khoo
Seok Wan and Lim Boon Keng, Kang also established a local Reformist Party to keep in contact with Chinese reformers around the world. Therefore, this paper hopes to explore Kang Youwei’s refuge in Singapore, and his influence over the Chinese in Singapore during late Qing. |
