The spatial poetics of Eileen Chang's novels

Description
Eileen Chang's literary works often center on the emotional lives and relationships of urban men and women. Yet, the settings in her novels frequently depict the daily lives within decaying aristocratic families. She has a particular affinity for describing old mansions, shadowy corridors, and desolate courtyards, creating a pervasive atmosphere of coldness and desolation. Within the context of modern and cosmopolitan urban environments, she juxtaposes the imagery of new Shanghai with that of old China, crafting a layered and contrasting narrative. Eileen Chang's unique approach to spatial representation not only underscores her preference for a melancholic aesthetic but also subverts the dominant revolutionary historical narratives by highlighting the everyday stories of urban residents. By extending her detailed, micro-level spatial depictions to encompass broader and more abstract themes such as gender, urban life, and national identity, her work gains additional depth and research value. This paper explores the spatial narrative techniques in Eileen Chang's novels, using four critical perspectives: "Space and Gender," "Space, Class, and Race," "Space and Place," and "Comparative Studies of Space." Through an in-depth analysis of texts and theories, this study examines the intricate interconnections among themes such as gender and power, class and consumerism, race and urban spaces, fetishism and place, memory and locale. The aim is to reflect on and respond to Eileen Chang's spatial poetics from the standpoint of literary lineage.
