Description
Summary:This study investigates the experience of GPT-enabled reflective journaling using a custom-made GPT tool. Utilising semi-structured interviews with 12 participants underpinned by a constructivist grounded theory approach, the research examines how the tool and journaling methodology facilitates in-depth reflection, aligns with gold-standard reflective journaling principles synthesised from current literature, and influences users’ reflective processes. Findings reveal that the GPT tool effectively encourages in-depth reflection, provides structured guidance and enhances metacognitive awareness through a dynamic, iterative, collaborative and conversational reflection approach. However, the tool faces challenges in facilitating the highest levels of reflection and exhibiting genuine emotional empathy. Implications for practice, tool development and future research are discussed to optimise the effectiveness of AI-assisted reflective journaling.
