Rotation, folding, page connection: book design and narrative in children's picturebooks

Most importantly, they represent a child's experience. As an art form, picturebooks offer creators a unique opportunity to explore the boundaries and possibilities of the book as a material object. This dissertation examines children's picturebooks from the perspective of text and image studies and materiality, considering how design elements, including graphic layout elements, typographical elements and materials, permeate and transform the text. The corpus for this study was primarily collected during a visit to the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany. Utilizing its online catalog, I gathered and analyzed over 230 modern interactive picturebooks from the library's archive, spanning from 1893 to 2023 and encompassing more than 10 languages. The dissertation categorizes these books into three main topics: rotation, folding, and animation between pages. The first topic, rotation, explores how the graphic design of a picturebook encourages readers to rotate the pages or the entire book, addressing the issues of nonlinear reading and the involvement of the body in the reading process. The second topic, folding, examines how the design of folded pages in picturebooks creates surprises and reinforces narratives, providing a typological analysis of the fold-expand mechanism of book pages. The third topic, animation between pages, discusses the techniques and artistic displays used to connect one page to the next, focusing on shape and shadow games within the layout of a spread page. This study concludes that picturebooks with manipulative features challenge traditional reading habits and expectations through unique designs, offering significant advantages in enhancing sensory and aesthetic experiences. By innovating in layout, structure, and materials, these books transform reading into a multi-sensory, participatory process, bridging education and aesthetics while integrating physical exploration with creative meaning-making.
