韓素音（1916-2012）是20世紀下半葉一名歐亞裔作家，集醫生、作家、社會活動家、公共知識分子等多重身分於一身，其一生與近代中國和戰後亞洲歷史上的許多關鍵時刻互為交織。作為一名因言情小說而成名的歐亞裔多產作家，她自1950年代初來到馬來亞便開始從事社會活動，通過虛構和非虛構寫作來記錄歷史，其作品既受世界範圍內廣泛關注，也同時為她帶來讚譽與貶評。 本論文將韓素音置於戰後亞洲背景下，將研究範圍設在 1949 年中國大陸政權易手到1980年代初後文革時期這30餘年這一時段，著重探討韓素音在去殖獨立時期以文學作為抵抗而發出的異議聲音。本研究採用了新近挖掘的原始資料，其中有些資料是首次曝光。透過分析韓素音的虛構小說與非虛構書寫，本論文也探究了韓素音戳穿帝國話語的“逆寫”實踐，而對人物多面向分析，讓這位“知名但有爭議”的人物更加有血有肉。 同時，身為新中國私下認可的“外國友人”，韓素音是當年少數能接觸到中共高級領導層的海外人士，她自賦使命地為中國外交效力、卻又因懼於當局控制而避免做出負面批評的處境，揭示了執政權力與知識分子之間的關係。 韓素音的多重世界迷人且複雜。本論文藉著走進韓素音的多重世界，填補了迄今這位多面向人物在整體學術研究上的空白，也為今人認識亞洲與中國近當代歷史提供了一個難得且獨特的微觀視角。 關鍵詞：韓素音；多面向性；離散研究；後殖民知識分子；虛構與非虛構書寫 A physician, writer, social activist, and public intellectual, Han Suyin (1916-2012) was a famous yet controversial public figure in postcolonial Asia in the second half of the 20th century. Her worlds were fascinating and complex, with each facet contributing to her fame as well as her controversy. Her life, which coincided with pre- and post-war years in Asia, was intertwined with many critical moments in the history of modern China and Cold War Asia. As a prolific writer engaged in social activism, she documented history through both fictional and non-fictional writing, and her works, while drawing world-wide attention, drew both praises and criticism. Addressing the lack of an in-depth look into the different worlds of this luminous figure, this dissertation lends a microhistorical lens to the human conditions of the overseas Chinese in Cold War and adds to our current knowledge of the contemporary histories of both Asia and China. Conducted within a timeframe of 30 years, ranging from 1949 to 1979 this study explores Han Suyin’s dissenting voice in the face of new nationalist powers, with a view to recognizing her role in Malaya’s public space during decolonialization. On the other hand, with a self-imposed mission to serve China's diplomacy, Han Suyin was one of the few overseas-based “foreign friends” who had access to the top leadership of the CCP, and helped convey messages from China’s top leadership to the outside world. This study tries to capture both the highlighting moments, as well as the caution exercised, by Han Suyin during her years of serving China, as they serve to shed some light on the personal choices made by individual intellectuals in the face of state power. This study makes use of new primary sources, some of which have come to light for the first time. Through a close reading of her fictional novels and non-fiction works, this study attempts to present the literary and journalistic skills she once employed in debunking imperial discourse, thus revealing her complex and contradictory qualities of being "famous but controversial" as a public figure.
