With the advent of the digital age, the world is now at our fingertips, and pets have become an integral part of the online world, captivating audiences in ways that go beyond their real-world counterparts. This thesis explores the online pet culture in contemporary China and aims to examine the representations and phenomena of pets on the internet and social media. By analysing how they are being represented online, this essay intends to uncover the cultural significance and psychological motivations behind these pet-related content, as well as reflecting on them. Additionally, this thesis will discuss how animals in today’s digital context are assigned new identities and meanings from multiple perspectives.
