Description
Summary:With the growing importance of personal identification and authentication in today’s highly advanced world where most business and personal tasks are being replaced by electronic means, the need for a technology that is able to uniquely identify an individual and has high fraud resistance saw the rise of biometric technologies. Biometric-based solution is now fairly common and widespread. Palm print recognition is an effective biometric technology that is gaining widespread acceptance and interest from researchers all over the world. As with most other biometric technologies, the process of palm print identification includes various stages from data acquisition, data pre-processing, feature extraction to matching process. The main aim of this research is to improve the segmentation process to increase the system robustness. By implementing and integrating a new square-based palm print segmentation method into the previous application suite, the system is now able to overcome the limiting problem of failure to process palm print images with closed fingers, thus increasing the flexibility of the system and in turn open up the possibility of bringing the palm print technology mobile. A new set of palm print image database captured using embedded cameras in mobile phone was also created to test against the new segmentation technique on its robustness.
