Reintroduction of the rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros) in Singapore.
Based on sighting reports of a female Rhinoceros Hornbill (Buceros Rhinoceros) (FRH) in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (BTNR), Singapore, a study was undertaken by the Singapore Avian Conservation Project to pave the way towards the species’ reintroduction. In this study, the FRH and its partner in the...

In this study, the FRH and its partner in the wild, a female Great Hornbill (Buceros Bicornis) (FGH), were observed, lured, trapped and captured, using an Artificial Nest (AN), and an aviary containing a male RH (MRH). A GPS unit was attached to the FRH before its eventual release, while the FGH was transferred to the Jurong Bird Park, Singapore. Determination of the subspecies of the FRH and MRH at the DNA level, coupled with data from the GPS unit, will give vital information for the next stage of the reintroduction.
