Summary: | This thesis focuses on the chirality selective growth of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT) in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). SWCNT possesses exceptional properties which are (n,m) structure dependent. Preferential growth of SWCNTs with specific (n,m) structures is desired for many potential applications. SWCNT chirality may be controlled by the dynamic interaction between catalytic metal particles and carbon networks formed on the metal particle surface. Therefore, three factors, which could influence the SWCNT chirality in CVD growth, are explored: (1) carbon precursor, (2) pressure, and (3) catalyst substrate. Several techniques are employed to characterize catalysts (e.g. X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and temperature programmed reduction) and SWCNTs (e.g. Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible-near infrared absorption spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis) in order to understand the chirality selectivity of SWCNTs. |
