Effects of media characteristics on the performance of upflow anaerobic packed-bed reactors

Aerobic treatment of wastewaters has often encountered problems caused by excessive solids production and limitations to adequate oxygen transfer. While not being limited by these drawbacks, anaerobic treatment of wastewaters with high performance can be feasible along with low sludge yield, high pr...

While not being limited by these drawbacks, anaerobic treatment of wastewaters with high performance can be feasible along with low sludge yield, high process stability and biogas generation. An anaerobic packed-bed reactor is essentially a column filled with a support medium whereby biomass is either present as suspended solids trapped within the interstitial void spaces, or as attached biofilm adhering onto the media surfaces. As wastewater is passed through the medium, waste decomposition is accomplished by the attached or suspended biomass.
