Description
Summary:The implementation of video conferencing system on the Internet is not trivial. This is because video conferencing involves the communications of time sensitive video and audio streams but the transmissions of these streams in packets on the Internet are subjected to loss and variable network delays. Reliable transport protocol such as TCP cannot be used to support real-time applications with time sensitive data streams in an environment that can have high retransmission due to packet loss. The quality of the video and audio playback at the receiver is thus decided by the way the application manages packet loss and network jitters. Results of research on packet audio and packet video transmissions on the Internet have been incorporated by standard bodies as guidelines for development. The ITU-T recommendation H.323 has gained wide acceptance as the standard for desktop video conferencing on the Internet.
