To facilitate communications of such data, compression is necessary. Compression seeks to remove as much as possible, spatial and temporal redundancies in the images, as well as to exploit the weaknesses of the human visual system. There are three common compression algorithms in use today namely, JPEG, MPEG-1 and H.261. Each of these algorithms has its own applications.
