Description
Summary:Rapid advances in fiber-optic technology and an ever growing hunger for more bandwidth has sparked off a revolution in data communications. Customers' needs have grown more diverse and integrated simultaneously. To meet these changing demands and take advantage of new technology that has become available, CCITT is currently looking into the standardisation of a wide area networking strategy collectively known as Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (BISDN). Its main feature involves the use of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) which is based on a packet communications architecture with several modifications to cater for higher transmission speeds and diverse traffic characteristics. Some advantages that can be expected from this new networking design include economics of scale, high bandwidth and flexibility.
