Summary:In the offshore industry, a common operation problem is the last minute change of barge scheduled for transporting an offshore jacket to the designated location for installation while fabrication of the jacket is almost complete. Arising from this last minute alteration and/or addition of loading conditions, some of the tubular joints need to be reinforced in order to avoid punching shear failure due to axial compression. One of the convenient and less costly methods is to reinforce the joints with doubler plates. However, such reinforcements may have negative effects when the joints are subjected to different loading conditions. Thus the study of the behaviour of welded tubular joints reinforced with doubler plates is important, for which there is hardly any literature on such joint reinforcements
