Wear resistance of sintered ceramics for high speed precision punching of copper alloy

This report presents the wear resistance of three types of sintered ceramics (tungsten carbide, NPZ-1 grey zirconia ceramic and a white engineering ceramic) in the application of high speed punching operations of copper alloy. Research work of various researchers on the strength and toughening mecha...

Research work of various researchers on the strength and toughening mechanism of ceramics like zirconia and alumina with various stabilising agents were included. Punching operation and its mechanics are also discussed. A preliminary study of wear resistance coatings on punches is carried out using TiN, TiAIN and DLC coatings. This includes coating thickness and uniformity, coating hardness, and adhesion strength. Field trial with failure analysis to compare the coatings reveals that the coatings do not reduce the wear significantly probably due to the severe stresses at the cutting edge.
