In September 1992, the authors, in collaboration with Mrs. Doris Fok, the Lactation Consultant of Kandang Kerbau Hospital conducted a study on mothers who delivered in KKH with the objective of determining if it were more economical for households to breastfeed or bottlefeed (also refered to as artificial feed) an infant for the first three months. The hypothesis that it is more cost effective to breastfeed than to bottlefeed was tested. 321 mothers participated in the survey over a period of 6 months facilitated by 25 nurses who participated in a lactation course conducted by Mrs. Doris Fok.
