Summary:In the last half century, the technology needed for developing electronics systems from conception to the consumer has seen many advances. Some like the invention of the integrated circuit is liken to quantum leap while others like the development of interconnects are incremental. MCM technology although viewed in some quarters as just an improved version of hybrid circuits, is significant in that for the first time, it marks an emerging technology that fuses together two established technologies, silicon integrated circuits and board interconnects. Coupled with the demand for greater miniaturisation of products with greater complexity of electronics, its future role in the industry is no longer in doubt. This is demonstrated in its use in products such as Integral Peripheral's latest 1.8 inch hard Disk Drive and Nokia's series of mobile phones. In the words of interconnect expert, John Blade of Interconnection Decision Consulting: "....MCM revolution in the 1990s will have an impact on electronics (industry) as great or greater than surface mount technology had for the 1980s".
