Calvert, Phillip School of Applied Science DRNTU::Library and information science::Libraries::Information sources The product of this dissertation is a 'good' set of evaluation criteria which can be used to evaluate newspaper Web sites. A literature review was done to study how other researchers have examined Web sites, and a comparison made of their criteria. The first draft of an evaluation tool was written based on a consensus of the criteria found in the literature. A focus group of five information professionals examined this evaluation tool shown to them. Revisions to the tool were then made based on their scrutiny, and this process iterated till there were no more changes made. The final version (5th version) of the evaluation tool contains 45 questions categorised under eight broad headings: Authority, Content, Currency of Information, Ease of Use, Design and Layout, Web Publishing, Speed, and Miscellaneous. Some of the questions are marked with an * to indicate that they carry more weighting (are more important) than others. It is recommended that similar research be carried out on different types of Web sites, or with variations in the focus group technique. A similar evaluation tool with numeric scores is also recommended.
