Summary:Expert Systems (ES) or Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) are computer programs that use knowledge to solve problems in a variety of functional areas like diagnostics, scheduling, design etc. They differ from conventional programs in that they reason with knowledge that is represented both symbolically as well as numerically, using both algorithmic and heuristic methods. Both stand-alone systems, as well as embedded ones, working in concert with other systems, are possible. Although there has been a significant rise in the number of implemented industrial ES, the success rate has been uneven. This is in large part due to the limited tools available to capture and codify knowledge and a general lack of standards in developing such systems, particularly in knowledge elicitation.
