Cognitive radios are intelligent radios that are adapted to sense spectrum holes and transmit data in an identified spectrum hole. A spectrum hole is a band of frequencies that is assigned to a primary radio but, at a particular time and at a specific geographic location, the band is not being used by the primary radio. The cognitive radio can transmit data in a spectrum occupied by primary radio without interference it. The main purpose of a cognitive radio is to improve spectrum utilization.
