The yellow culture became common in the Singapore society during the early 50’s ever since the declaration of the Malayan Emergency in 1948. The yellow culture existed in the forms of strip-tease shows, blue books, “mosquito papers”, films, etc. Social security was at its lowest during that period. In October 1953, the case of Miss Chong Geok Tin sparked off an “Anti-Yellow Culture Movement”, led by students from Chinese schools. The movement aimed to obliterate the “unhealthy” yellow culture and advocate “healthy” literature. This in the process brought Malayan’s literacy to new heights. |
