A study of Loo Zihan’s experimental film "Solos" and its reconstruction of the image of Singapore mother and the homosexual identity

Solos, the experimental local...

Description
Solos, the experimental local film produced in 2007, was directed by local filmmakers Loo Zihan and Kan Lume. It is largely based on Singapore context, with its story inspired by true events in Singapore and Mother being the most autobiographical character in the film. Solos was officially selected in many international film festivals and received remarkable responses. It was even selected to participate in competition for the Silver Screen awards in the Singapore International Film Festival. However, Solos was unable to officially screen in Singapore after receiving three cuts from the Board of Film Censors. Loo Zihan’s works have yet to surface in any academic research and analyses of Solos are limited to film reviews. This paper seeks to place Solos in an academic discussion, with focus on the image of Mother and the relationship between society and the construction of homosexual identity. The discussion will also bring in issues regarding Singapore gay politics.
