Summary:Emperor Ming (Zhu Yuan Zhang) rose from peasant to the founder of Ming Dynasty, and that in history of China was very rare. He also founded the first secret agency, Jin Yi Wei, which was the secret service of the Ming emperors, Imperial highest Central Intelligence Agency. They were initially personal bodyguard of Emperor Ming, but was soon entrusted and empowered to watch over his officials. Ruthless ways of punishment were what people fear most of them and is Emperor’s way of discipline his people. He also believed in education, where it was the best way to change the culture of the country. Using education and disciplinary methods against his people, were his way of ruling the country. In this thesis, the focus will be on Emperor Ming’s ideology on discipline, punishment and education of people and using Michel Foucault’s theory of power to explain his actions. Chapter one will be the introduction of why and how this topic comes about, what are the recent academic research on the topic and lastly the methodology. Chapter two and three will talk about Emperor Ming’s characteristic and how he succeeded in gaining dictatorship and changing the whole political system. Chapter four and five will discuss how the Imperial highest Central Intelligence Agency use tortures and what are the theory behind all these actions. Lastly, Chapter six will be a summary of this thesis.
