新加坡是个多元民族多元文化的国家，使用的语言有英语、华语、马来语和泰米尔语这四种官方语言，但因华人族群占多数，因此绝大部分的新加坡人都以英语和华语为最常使用的语言。一般来说，教学上的语言媒介也属中英两语，所以多数新加坡人理应都能掌握这两种语言。也因如此，新加坡广泛地被认为是双语社会，中英两语的掌握被理所当然地看成是应该的。曾有学者说过：语言态度是人类语言生活中的一个重要组成部分，它常常通过语言使用来体现；而语言使用，又往往给语言能力的大小以决定性的影响；语言能力转而影响到人们使用语言的频率，通过使用语言的效果，不知不觉地改变着人们的语言态度。Singapore is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural country. The languages which are most commonly used are English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. However, due to the large population of Chinese, the majority of Singaporeans see English and Mandarin as their most commonly used languages. In general, these are also the mediums of communication in education; hence, most Singaporeans should have a good command of both languages. Furthermore, Singapore is widely regarded as a bilingual society, and thus it is deemed natural for its people to be able to master the two languages.
