The model is being used in workplace settings and is modified in our study for volunteering. We would be testing to see if ability, role perceptions and situational factors can explain reasons behind motivation. We would also be looking at personal motives in volunteering and determine which, self-actualisation or altruism is more prominent. We conducted a survey which garnered 266 respondents from four local universities. Results have shown that the components of the MARS model can independently explain the reasons; self-actualisation motives stem more than altruism. “Role perceptions” was tested to be the most important factor amongst the three elements. We will explore on how non-profit organisations (NPOs) can use the model to attract and retain its volunteers. 2010-03-22T09:24:47Z 2010-03-22T09:24:47Z 2010 2010 Final Year Project (FYP) http://hdl.handle.net/10356/21208 en Nanyang Technological University 48 p. application/pdf |

This study aims to explain the motivation behind undergraduate volunteers using the
MARS model. The model is being used in workplace settings and is modified in our study
for volunteering. We would be testing to see if ability, role perceptions and situational
factors can explain reasons behind motivation. We would also be looking at personal
motives in volunteering and determine which, self-actualisation or altruism is more
prominent. We conducted a survey which garnered 266 respondents from four local
universities. Results have shown that the components of the MARS model can
independently explain the reasons; self-actualisation motives stem more than altruism.
“Role perceptions” was tested to be the most important factor amongst the three elements.
We will explore on how non-profit organisations (NPOs) can use the model to attract and retain its volunteers. |
