Summary:THR is a surgical procedure in which diseased parts of the hip joint are removed and replaced with artificial prostheses. Successful replacement of deteriorated, arthriiic, and severely injured hips has contributed to enhanced mobility and comfortable, independent living for many people who would otherwise be substantially disabled. However, following THR, some patients may have problems such as limited range of leg movement, change of leg length, impingement and even dislocation. The most common cause of these problems is malposition of the acetabular component. A novel Augmented Reality Orthopaedic Aid (ARORA) was developed at ClMlL in this project to assist surgeons to overcome the malposition problem. The system uses stereo X-ray image, vision based tracking and augmented reality technology. It allows a surgeon to determine not only the optimal size, but also the optimal position and orientation of the acetabular implant during pre-operation planning, based on a pair of X-ray images of a patientes anatomy. The surgeones decision is recorded automatically to markers on the patientes pelvis. The markers are tracked in real time during surgery. The surgeones determination is registered back to the markers and displayed by overlay a guiding line on the patient during surgery.
