Description
Summary:This research attempts to ethnographically study the transnational consumption of Korean popular culture among Singaporean youth. Specifically, it intends to understand how they have created an “imagined community” (cf. Anderson 1991) of so-called K-pop lovers. In addition, it explores how popular culture capital of knowledge has been utilized to form informal hierarchies within the community. By examining their consumption of Korean popular culture, this study will discuss the ways in which the Singaporean youths have created and experienced a transnational consumption community, in which they have negotiated their membership status and hierarchies. The empirical data that I analyzed in this thesis mainly draws from my ethnographic research consisting of participant observation, face-to-face interviews and online interviews, among Singaporean youths for a period of six months between 2009 and 2010.
