Description
Summary:A novel method for adaptive mesh refinement and simplification for cloth animation is presented in this thesis. Adaptive refinement is a well-known topic in many areas including computer graphics, computational physics and finite element modelling. It aims to improve the performance by the redistribution of computational efforts over the spatial domain. More detailed regions are simulated with finer resolutions while the less detailed regions are simulated with more coarse ones. The novelty of the proposed method is its application to the arbitrary triangu-lar meshes and the introduction of the simplification operation. Special attention has been paid to the conservation of the mesh quality during the refinement and simplifica-tion processes. The proposed method is described in three main parts: the refinement criterion which determines the proper mesh resolution for every mesh region, the re-finement rule which is used to adjust the local resolution, and the algorithm which preserves the mesh quality.
