Hindrances to breast cancer screening : how do women's medical and social knowledge stop them from going for breast cancer screening?

This paper seeks to understand factors that hinder a group of Singaporean women of Chinese ethnicity from doing breast self-examination and going for breast screenings in light of breast cancer. The sample falls between the age of 35 to 52 whom are individuals married with children. Breast cancer is one of the more common cancers that plague women. Investigations are based on the medical and social knowledge of the breasts that women possess as a result of constant socialization. Findings show that decisions to conduct breast self-examination and willingness to attend breast screenings are a result of not only the above mentioned, but also the cognitive rationality behind assigning different values to their activities as a result of financial constraints. This paper argues that as much as breast cancer is a social issue, it is also largely an economic concern.
