Summary:Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) is an emerging technology, in which electrical energy is applied through electrodes to nerves or muscles in order to restore the lost functions in patients with neuromuscular deficits. Commercial FES systems are currently being evaluated for limited control of hand functions, bladder emptying and walking. The functional capabilities offered by the best among those devices leave a great deal to be desired. There are several major problems associated with FES devices that restrict their use as the ideal means for restoring lost functions: the early muscle fatigue and the crude control of limb functions.
