Many have criticised Chick Lit novels such as Sex and the City for being anti-feminist; however, I seek to prove that Chick Lit should be considered postfeminist instead. The former waves of feminism often denied the relevance of traditional representations of “femininity” in order to amplify their political demands but such demands have now been met and modern women have the luxury to choose to indulge in acts that were once been linked to female subjugation, such as being a stay-at-home wife/mother. The social, cultural and political concerns of the former waves of feminism are no longer as relevant to women today since they now have much more liberation, freedom and also, the power to make their own choices. My essay seeks to achieve a more open-minded opinion of Chick Lit and recognize that consciousness-raising writing is not the only option for female readers who wish to gain a sense of empowerment and an authentic female view.
