The dissertation proposes to take gender discourse as an analytical tool to explain the conditions of instability of Afghanistan: a dysfunctional state. This paper argues that women have a significant stake in state-building and transforming a war-torn country. But in war and peace women tend to get lost and be systematically excluded. The paper, therefore, argues that both recurrences of violence and insecurity can be reversed by empowering women, one of the most marginalized groups in Afghanistan. However, this is not an alternative, rather complimentary to the use of other means- building and enforcing an infrastructure for security and development. In other words, in order to achieve its full legitimacy and nationhood, Afghanistan needs to genuinely initiate women's participation in the political, social, economic and cultural aspects.
