Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Social sciences::Political science::Political institutions::Asia 49 p. This dissertation examines the political instability in Indonesia after the demise of Suharto regime. The political instability is mainly due to the frequent changes of the executive of the state. The dissertation focuses on comparative politics between the Suharto period and Post Suharto period (from Habibie to Megawati). The political stability in the Suharto era was mainly caused by the congruence of the five key drivers: president, the military and the police, political parties, bureaucracy and the role of economic players. Whereas, in post Suharto era, the preceding key drivers did not run properly that caused political instability. During Habibie era, the main key drivers of instability were the military and the police. During Abdurrahman Wahid's presidency, the military, police and political parties became the most decisive key drivers of instability. During Megawati period, the role of economic players became a critical key driver of instability.
